un jour cet air me rendra folle
Madeleine was born in the small town of Verdun-sur-Meuse, located in the North East part of France, at the tail end of World War I. She grew up while the town was still rebuilding after the eleven month long Battle of Verdun against the German forces. Her father was a soldier who had survived the costly war, and her mother a telegraph clerk. Up until fifteen Madeleine worked around the house as well as took care of her younger brother, Remy, who was nine years younger. She was sent to finishing school much later than most girls, at the age of sixteen, but time and money was always a challenge for a working class family. Even with her mother and father scraping for money, Maddie still worked, and tutored, to pay her tuition and by the time she completed her terms she was nineteen.
When Hitler took victory over Poland in 1939 invasion, and war, was imminent - the Lemieux's made plans to flee France. They had the money but with the lightning war techniques used in Germany's blitzkrieg, French forces were thinned out even more so since the first World War. The fall of France, as well as Belgium and Holland, started in May of 1940 and soon German forces were emerging from the Ardennes and taking over Allied territories. Her parents and brother Remy were able leave, promising to return for her or send someone to get her, but they never left France alive. Her family was caught and forced into one of the concentration camps for resistance and rebellion. Maddie herself was forced into a collection camp, temporarily held before being routed to one of the main camps, that also housed some of Hitler's paramilitary.
While being transported to a labor camp in Natzweiler, France -- just outside of Strasbourg and close to Hitler's Third Reich -- Madeleine was able to get free and escape the truck. She didn't go unnoticed however, being shot at and pursued by German soldiers as she ran on foot through the thick forest. Luckily enough she ran right into a two man patrol of Allied forces. The American soldiers showed her mercy and compassion, taking her back to their camp to be sent to the nearest aid station. But that night a group of Schutzstaffel, officers of the infamous paramilitary, and swept through the company of soldiers like nothing Madeleine had ever seen or heard of. Hitler's SS was under the impression that she had fled with vital information and rather than kill her they had plans to turn her against the Allies. It was the night she witnessed first hand the true horrors of vampirism, and the night she died.
Being an angry, rebellious baby vamp, expected to act as a spy was an adjustment she didn't take well. Course it didn't help that her maker was ordered to release her right away so her only allegiance would be to the Führer. Once she was released of the glamor, her allegiance was also broken and Madeleine fought tooth and nail to escape the Ardennes. In desperation, and sure that Schutzstaffel would be after her, she fled to America. After she was able to get herself under control, having fed on those who had followed her, she started to settle in to her new home -- getting fraudulent papers made up under the name of Coraline Meloche. Even under her new alias she laid low, after all vampires were still unknown to the world and despite how accepting America claimed to be, and the soldiers she had met, they weren't ready to deal with that. Maddie didn't even like what she was -- how could she have possibly expected anyone else to?
After watching President Kennedy's famous Ich bin ein Berliner speech in June of 1963, Maddie tried to forgive but simply couldn't bring herself to no matter how hard she tried. America and Berlin's union with Germany over having a common enemy and being "buddy buddy" seemed surreal, offensive, and hard for her to accept. So much that she left America and took it upon herself to hunt down all of Hitler's beloved paintings, which were now being sold for high-price on the market, and those that saw beauty in the Führer's so-called art. For the past forty-odd years she has traveled the globe as a private art consultant, using her previous though limited espionage training to her advantage and burning over 50 of Hitler's various pieces; as well as killing those who had purchased or inherited them.
As a vampire she has enhanced strength, speed and senses. She also has the ability to heal quickly, though extreme blood loss will slow this process. Madeleine has the same weaknesses as all vampires; a wooden stake through the heart will kill her, sunlight will char her skin and cause her to burst into flames, and she must survive on the blood of the living. Because Josef never really taught her how to live as a vampire, Madeleine has poor self control with resisting bloodlust and primal instinct, resulting in a lot of unnecessary deaths.
